For Beryl B. Bowden, her journey at New York University (NYU) began in 1988 as an administrative aid in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Little did she know then, that this initial role would mark the start of a remarkable 35-year career journey within the institution. Inspired by the opportunity to contribute to a renowned academic institution and fueled by her passion for people, Beryl’s career trajectory at NYU saw her navigate through various departments, each bringing its own set of challenges and opportunities for growth.
Beryl found herself traversing through departments such as the Registrar’s Office, Public Affairs, and more at NYU, until finally finding her niche in admissions when an opportunity emerged in the Information Center. In 2018, Beryl reached a milestone as she became the manager of the Bonomi Welcome Center of Admissions, where she played a pivotal role in renaming the welcome center, marking yet another achievement in her illustrious career.
Reflecting on her tenure at NYU, Beryl recalls numerous highlights and memorable encounters. From hosting distinguished visitors like Michelle Obama, Wesley Snipes, and Angela Bassett to fostering a welcoming environment for countless prospective students and families, Beryl’s role as a manager at the Bonomi Welcome Center allowed her to leave a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Her commitment to excellence, coupled with her genuine care for people, made her a beloved figure within the NYU community. Affectionately known as Ms. B., Beryl was ready with a smile to greet 300-400 visitors daily.

One of the defining moments in Ms. B.’s journey was her introduction to CIVSA in 1994, thanks to the encouragement of one of her grad assistants. Attending CIVSA conferences became a source of inspiration and learning, where Beryl found a sense of camaraderie among peers from various universities, regardless of size or prestige. The collaborative spirit and shared dedication to student recruitment and experience resonated deeply with Beryl, making her an active and cherished member of the association throughout her career. She shared, “ no man is an island, no man stands alone.” If another colleague had a question, they could readily reach out to Ms. B. for more information and assistance. Her aim was to “unite respective staff members as a team and allow them to lean on one another,” said Beryl.
As Beryl embarks on her retirement journey, her passion for serving others remains undiminished. Engaging in philanthropic endeavors alongside her husband, she finds fulfillment in giving back to communities both locally and internationally. From serving as a co-pastor of a church, where her husband is a Bishop – to contributing to the establishment of a school in remote area in Ghana, Beryl continues to embody the spirit of service that defined her career at NYU.
Looking back on her remarkable journey, Beryl is grateful for the opportunities she had to make a difference and touch the lives of others. Her legacy at NYU is not just measured by her professional accomplishments but by the countless lives she impacted with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication. As she embarks on this new chapter in her life, Beryl remains optimistic, believing that, “the best is yet to come!”
