[civsa] Tour guide hiring process

Hi Jasmin,

On our application for the paid student employee position, we request a cover letter and resume. We also ask students to write a short essay to answer the question, “If you were speaking with a prospective student and his/her parents, what would you identify as the most compelling reasons to attend the University of Kentucky and why?”

Our interview process is a short one primarily because we have a volunteer-based student recruiting organization, from where we pull many of our applicants for the paid position. Their work as a volunteer is often a good predictor of the dedication and success they would have in the paid position.

Interviews are conducted in groups of 3-4 applicants. Those applicants are interviewed by our panel that includes 2-4 members of our student leadership team, our associate director, and myself. We ask questions about their involvement on campus, why they want to be a tour guide, their customer service experience, and more. We have a set of scenario-based questions we’ve heard on tours that we ask them on the spot such as “Do you have to go Greek to fit in at UK?” or “I’ve heard this is a suitcase school; is that true?” or “What is there to do on the weekends?”

Finally, we ask them ahead of time to prepare a 2-3 minute spiel on two different areas of campus. They will give this “tour stop” in front of the panel while other applicants step outside the room. We invite them to treat the panel as their own tour group, so this allows us to better see how comfortable they are talking in front of strangers.

I hope this information helps a bit. I’d be happy to talk more by phone if I can be of any other assistance. I also believe this topic has been covered in the listserv before, so you may be interested in reviewing the listserv/forum archives in the Members Only section at civsa.org.

Best of luck in your hiring process!

Taylor

Hi all!

Would anyone be willing to share their hiring process for tour guides? We’ve created a format that’s been helpful in finding great guides but has been a bit time-consuming (I’m happy to share too!). Since we’re on a quarter system we’re looking for ways to shorten our process.

Have a great weekend all!

Jasmin
