[civsa] Showing Residence Hall Rooms

We show rooms in our freshman residence hall and have available both a double room as well as a triple room. Rooms are shown on all tours of campus for undergraduate students (NOT for our graduate tours) whether weekday daily tours or special events (open houses, accepted student days, etc). We used to pay students to show their rooms but the last 3 years have been able to have 2 rooms used specifically and only by Admissions.

Typically only one of the rooms is shown during a tour as the ambassador will take the key for the appropriate room; rooms are shown on the 1st floor as well as 2nd floor but as we don't have elevators in the residence hall the ambassadors will speak with the family as to preference before they leave. When we have multiple groups going out at the same time then both rooms are shown and we will switch off the rooms keys at the front desk attendant for the ambassadors to pick up.

During large events (i.e. Open Houses) we have 2 staff members who open both rooms and facilitate the tour groups so that there isn't a bottle-neck at the rooms; we will send the group to view the laundry/kitchens/game rooms, etc. prior to the room.

Note: "residence hall only" tours are accommodated on a one-off basis and are typically noted when the visit is scheduled so we can prepare the ambassadors ahead of time.

:) Laura

Hello Danae,
At Carson-Newman, the dorm is included in the daily visits. If it's a preview day where there are large groups on campus, we set aside a specific time to show the dorms.

I hope this helps.

Hello CIVSA!

I'm curious about how your institutions handle showing residence hall rooms to your prospective students? Do you all include showing a room on your campus tour, or have a separate tour, specifically for showing residence hall room(s)? Maybe both?

Any answers help :)

Thank you,

Danae Nagle

Hello!

We have one residence hall showroom - it's a designated easy-to-enter room in a freshman male residence hall. We often get requests to see a female hall too, but we don't have access. The showroom is part of our regular daily visit tour and is also shown to groups and during events.
