[civsa] Protocol for checking out a wheelchair to campus visitor

Hi Liz,
The University of Kentucky Visitor Center operates similar to Michigan and UC-Boulder when it comes to wheelchairs.
We have a wheelchair for guest use in our office. If a guest requests it ahead of time, we will set it aside. Sometimes folks ask for someone from our team to push the wheelchair when they visit, but we invite them to have someone traveling with them take that responsibility.
Like others, we also hold onto a state ID or driver’s license just to deter visitors from taking the wheelchair with them after their visit.
I might recall a previous CIVSA thread about liability waivers related to wheelchairs, but we do not have any sort of written form or release.
Take care,
Taylor

Hi Liz,
We have three wheelchairs that are available for guest use. If a guest calls ahead of time and asks to reserve one we will put one to the side for that guest. We also ask for a state ID just like UC-Boulder.

Hi, Liz. We do not have a written policy, but we do ask that guests give us a valid state ID (drivers license) while they use the wheelchair. When their tour is over, we tell them where to return the chair to get their ID back. We only take state IDs because of the accountability in wanting to get that back. We used to accept credit cards in exchange for the wheelchair but people would take off with the chair or return it to the wrong location (because they didn’t want to walk), cancel their credit card and open a new one. This has worked very well for us and we have not had issues in the past few years when asking for a state issued ID.

Hello all!
Happy Monday!
Do any of you provide wheelchairs to guests who attend a campus visit or event?
If so, what protocol(s) do you follow for checking out the wheelchair and ensuring you get it back?
If you have any written materials or information you can send me, I would be ever so grateful. ☺
Thank you all for your time!
~Liz
