[civsa] Tour Guides Walking Backwards and Hiring Process

Hello all,

Wanted to share a few things we have done in implementing tours in our office here at Valencia College. (we recently took them over from another office on campus, so are building from scratch).

For the hiring process, we did a group interview (since we weren't sure what turnout was going to look like was easier for us this way). They had to do an activity as a group first to see how they interacted with each other, and then they each had an opportunity to answer our questions, still as a group. We had about 5-6 per group and our questions are attached.

In terms of walking backwards, we don't use that technique for the same reasons others have mentioned. They have designated stopping points with certain information to highlight, and we also had our students create talking points they use while moving from stop to stop so they can engage in more personal conversations along the way. (what do you want to study, do you know where you want to live, where are you from, etc.) We ask that they engage with different people each time so that everyone feels connected with (our groups are max 15 so that's easier to do with our size).

Hope that's helpful!

Abby

Hello CIVSA Land,

I hope you are well!

We are about to begin hiring several new students as members of our ambassador/tour guide team. I am revamping the interview process this year to make it more holistic and to find students who would be a truly great fit for such a role. If you feel your school has a well-developed or unique hiring process, I would so appreciate learning more about what it is you are doing!

Thank you all,

Megan Miller

Hi there,

I am in a new role at a new university, and our tour guides currently walk backwards. I much prefer forward walking tours and would like to transition our guides to give towards walking forwards. We typically have 10-12 people per tour group. I know that this will be a big shift for our guides and our office. Does anyone have any advice/experience to share about how they navigated this switch? I would also be interested in any training ideas for this adjustment.

Thanks so much!

Anne,

We haven't had too much of an issue with tour guides walking backwards but a few newbies who joined this year thought it made sense to them to do it. The way we combat this is telling them to make sure and stop and face your group when they need to address them. That way no one is more concentrated on if the tour guide is going to fall rather than the information given during their tour. They are required to stop, at some point, near every major area of campus that we highlight. They'll either stop in front of buildings, stop inside near a classroom, or just stop in our open areas outside. That way they are looking at their audience and engaging with them.

It's easier when only correcting a few so correcting a group might be a little harder. My biggest suggestion would probably be to emphasize the issues with walking backwards. Maybe even shadowing them on your own. That way they are aware of the downsides and potential risks.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
