Good Day!

1) When are your admitted student visits? We hold 4 weekend Accepted Student Days either a Saturday or Sunday - 1 in February, 2 in March and 1 in early April although we also run a "Last Look" typically the weekend before May 1 (depending on calendar). The programs are from 8 am to 2 pm.

2) If you have an admitted student visit program in the middle of March, do you think they are mission critical? Yes - attendance tends to increase from February into March and then following into early April. It also allows for a cushion when we've had to cancel the February program due to weather. If they are unable to make any of the dates we find our daily visits increase in late January and into February which carries into March.

3) In your opinion at your school, is early April too late for an admitted program? Not at all. We always have 1 in early April and it tends to coincide with high schools' spring break (not Easter break) so do get many visitors.

4) Has anyone had to have a visit program while you school is on break. How did it go? Well yes and no! We usually have a program on the last Sunday of Spring Break when students are returning to campus so faculty will participate in these and it is not usually a problem to find ambassadors willing to return a little early although admittedly we tend to have a smaller group of ambassadors working the program (35 instead of 50).

We are on the quarter system, so March is a tricky time to plan visit programs due to finals week and spring break. We still offer daily visits including an admitted student session every morning, but I wonder if we are losing traction by not having anything during the second and third week of March.

So my questions:

1) When are your admitted student visits?

2) If you have an admitted student visit program in the middle of March, do you think they are mission critical?

3) In your opinion at your school, is early April too late for an admitted program?

4) Has anyone had to have a visit program while you school is on break. How did it go?

Thanks, and happy planning out there!

Greetings!

To answer a few of your questions, the University of Minnesota-Duluth does
the following:

1) We hold an Admitted Student Day revolving around each of our academic
colleges (five in total). There is always potential to have admitted
students attend our daily visits but we offer these day-long programs as a
closer look into the academic areas while offering tours, meals,
information fairs, etc.

2) Typically, we do not hold any formal Admitted Student programs beyond
the first week of March.

3) In my opinion, I think holding an Admitted Student program at any point
in the spring semester will work out fine. I believe that your attendance
will be higher earlier in the semester, but I don't think you can lose.

4) I think it can be done but there are a lot of challenges with hosting a
visit during a break period including: low student populations on campus to
illustrate a true campus feel, an inability to recruit an adequate number
of tour guides to pick up the tour shifts because they are on break, etc.
UMD currently does not advertise tour availability during our break periods
but we do offer exceptions on a case-by-case basis. We always communicate
to the families visiting during our break that it is a break period and
campus will not look like it typically does during the rest of the
semester. Once that information is shared, usually the families opt for a
different day. However, if they still decide to come, it is much easier to
accommodate one or two families rather than ten or more.

I hope this helps a little with your question!
