Subject: [civsa] Spring break visits
We are on the quarter system, so March is a tricky time to plan visit programs due to finals week and spring break. We still offer daily visits including an admitted student session every morning, but I wonder if we are losing traction by not having anything during the second and third week of March.
So my questions:
1) When are your admitted student visits?
We have 4 Spring Preview programs a year and run two semi-concurrent scheudules for each program. One track for prospective students and one track for admitted students. These are always on President's Day, the Monday of Oregon Spring Break (usually the second to last or last week of March), a Juniors Only program that Friday of Spring Break, and the first 2 Fridays of April
2) If you have an admitted student visit program in the middle of March, do you think they are mission critical?
For us, yes. We make it clear up front to our TOUR Ambassadors that they are required to work at least one program over spring break (since we offer a Spring Preview and a Juniors Only half day program) - so staffing is not normally an issue for us. This is the spring break for Oregon and surrounding states. We know these students are going to come either way so we would prefer to put them in a structured program. For Admitted students, we can provide a more information to them in an open house program during this decision making time.
3) In your opinion at your school, is early April too late for an admitted program?
For us it is not. We look at the spring break weeks of neighboring states to choose dates. At our 2 April programs, we are pretty evenly split between admitted students and prospective students. Also, our financial award packages go out that first week of April - so we have a lot of families visiting with that information in hand who want to talk to people in person. Our programs are about the same size all throughout the spring, just the percentage of admitted vs. prospective changes slightly.
4) Has anyone had to have a visit program while you school is on break. How did it go?
Yes, we have a Spring Preview and a Juniors Only half day program during our break. Always the largest programs for us.
Thanks, and happy planning out there!
