[civsa] Group interview questions/activity help

Hi Hilary,

We adopted UT Arlington's blind buddy drawing activity (mentioned during their session at the conference last year), and that has helped us in evaluating the guides' patience and creativity when working with others or faced with a dilemma during the group interview. Because our group sizes vary per interview slot, we will either pair each candidate with another candidate or with one of our current guides. Some candidates have done a great job in explaining the picture to their partners, while others have gone as far as taking the pen from their partners and drawing the picture themselves! We vary the pictures so that each group has a different picture to draw. At the end, we usually show the pictures and the attempts at drawing them to keep the mood of the interview light. The rules to the activity are below (I don't remember if this is exactly how UTA described it...):


-       Split the team into sets of two (or if there is an odd number of candidates and enough current guides, pair each candidate with a guide)

-       Give one partner a pen and a blank sheet of paper

-       Give the other partner a picture (usually just random shapes - we overlap some shapes to add difficulty)

-       Have Partner 2 describe the picture to Partner 1

-       Partner 1 draws as Partner 2 describes

-       At the end, take up the pictures and share with the group.

We encourage conversation with the candidates when they are paired with a current member. The full activity lasts about 5-10 minutes (depending on the size of the interview group).

Happy Friday!

We are holding group interviews for our new tour guides on Monday and Tuesday of next week and are panicking last minute thinking of questions since we have never done group interviews, only individual. Each interview will have three potential candidates in it and will last 30 minutes.

I am trying to think of an activity to start them off with to see how well they work together as a team, does anyone have any suggestions?
