[civsa] Overnight Visits

Nate,

At Capital University we offer overnight visits in the spring semester and only to accepted students. We do not advertise these online, rather just schedule when students or parents call and inquire. We try to select dates ahead of time and then offer those select dates because we know there are events happening on campus for the students to participate in or attend.

We have also found that Sunday-Monday overnights work well. The student can experience an afternoon/evening on campus Sunday and attend classes that we have arranged for them Monday.

Alecia

Hi Nate,

When we host students and/or adults overnight for select programs at Texas A&M University, we have them read and sign the attached applicable form (one is for the STUDENT and the other is for the ADULT).

In the past, we used student hosts in the dorms but have stopped that practice due to liability concerns. For several years now we have housed our prospects for select programs in hotels; females on one floor and males on a separate floor. Our student ambassadors monitor the floors throughout the night and we have adult staff on the premises as well.

Meredith

I am new to CIVSA, so if this question has been asked before, I apologize. We are a small public liberal arts university. As such, we must compete with small private schools. Because of this, we try to offer prospective students the same things that private schools offer, one of those being overnight visits.

For as long as I have been employed here, we have offered overnight visits Mondays through Thursdays, hosted by our Student Ambassadors. We have never had any issues, however, certain people have begun to express concern over this program. I was just wondering if any other schools out there offer overnight visits for prospective students, and, if you do, have you run into any problems? We have a general code of conduct contract we make the visitor sign before they arrive, but does anyone have anything else they give the students?

Personally, I like the ability to let a prospective student stay overnight, so any advice, concerns, stories, etc. you all might have would be greatly appreciated.
