[civsa] Overnight Visits

This is a great topic, Nate!  We are a medium-sized private university, and we’ve had a similar policy- overnights are available to admitted students, Mon-Thurs.  We haven’t run into any issues with conduct, but we have had issues.  It’s increasingly hard for us to find overnight volunteers who are reliable.  Even if we do have enough volunteers, the scheduling between the admitted student and current student is a logistical headache.  We’ve crunched some numbers, and our yields are only slightly higher for students who come for an overnight visit.  Because of these reasons, we’re thinking of relegating overnight visits to just a couple nights per year, during certain events only.

Does anyone else have any experience with cutting out or reducing overnight visits?  We’re getting some push back because there are some who feel like we need to offer ample overnight night opportunities because “everyone else does.”

I am new to CIVSA, so if this question has been asked before, I apologize.  We are a small public liberal arts university.  As such, we must compete with small private schools.  Because of this, we try to offer prospective students the same things that private schools offer, one of those being overnight visits.

For as long as I have been employed here, we have offered overnight visits Mondays through Thursdays, hosted by our Student Ambassadors.  We have never had any issues, however, certain people have begun to express concern over this program.  I was just wondering if any other schools out there offer overnight visits for prospective students, and, if you do, have you run into any problems?  We have a general code of conduct contract we make the visitor sign before they arrive, but does anyone have anything else they give the students?

Personally, I like the ability to let a prospective student stay overnight, so any advice, concerns, stories, etc. you all might have would be greatly appreciated.
