[civsa] Best Practices for Faculty Visits?

Dear Lynise,
We do not tell faculty what to discuss with students. Typically, faculty cover the academic program, what to expect in the classroom, hands-on learning opportunities, engagement in the classroom, career path and undergraduate research opportunities. Some faculty even show labs or classrooms during their appt. We leave the talking points regarding the institution to the Admissions Counselors. That is also a one-on-one appt. In regards to what students like and didn't like; if the faculty are enthusiastic about their academic programs(most are) and can give the students specific career path opportunities, then we usually get positive feedback. I would suggest that you make sure that when your academic college Deans and/or Department Chairs choose the representative that will meet with students that they keep all of the above factors in mind. The faculty that get the best reviews from students, get the "big" picture and are eager to help with recruitment are the best choices to meet with prospective students.
I hope this helps! Feel free to contact me directly if you have further questions.
Sincerely,
Amber

Subject: [civsa] Best Practices for Faculty Visits?
Greetings, from Grove City College!
Our college President has formed working groups to generate ideas and action steps to improve the College's recruitment culture. I am part of the campus environment group and we are currently discussing how we might better prepare and equip faculty for daily visits and how to make our academic department bulletin boards more attractive, engaging and meaningful for our visitors.
* We've observed many faculty feel comfortable meeting with prospective students, but some are unsure of the best points to cover. Do you have best practices or talking points that your faculty typically share when prospective students visit your campus? Would you share that resource with us?
* In addition to best practices, do you know of any studies or surveys that report what prospective students liked/didn't like/wanted/didn't want when meeting with a faculty member?
* Most of our academic departments have bulletin boards in their office suites. Do any of you have recommendations for what should be on department bulletin boards at your school?
I appreciate your ideas and suggestions.
