[civsa] Tour Evaluation Question

Hi Scott,
I have a couple of suggestions for changing your evaluation tool.
1. You could ask the additional question of "What could we have done to make your tour experience better?" and see what answers you get. If you have answers that contradict the "just right" answer, you may get data that better reflects the true opinions of your students.
2. You could ask participants to circle or check words that they associate with the tour. This way they can provide both positive and negative feedback at the same time. Here is an example we use:
a. How well do you feel the presenter shared the information? (select all that apply)
____ Very well! _____I understood most of it ____TMI (Too Much Info)
____ Seemed rushed _____Thorough ____Spoke clearly
____ Helpful _____Confusing ____Utilized technology appropriately
____ Hard to understand _____ Welcoming ____Left out important information
____other:__________________________________________________________________________________
3. You could also ask a question to give you data in relation to other tours that the student might have taken through a question like "Thinking about all of the college/university tours you've been on, this one was: a) too long, b) about the same amount of time, or c) too short."
4. You could ask the question in a way that requires the student to make a choice that doesn't give them a neutral option in the same way like "Which statement best describes your tour experience? A) it was too long B) I enjoyed it but felt it could have been shorter C) It was great"
Sincerely,

Subject: [civsa] Tour Evaluation Question
Happy Tuesday CIVSA! Got a question for the order regarding tour evaluations. On our evals here at Utah, we have a series of "goldilocks questions" that asks guests if the presentation/tour/housing, etc was either "too short, just right, too long" in that exact order. We have concerns over the length of the above mentioned components of the tour, but the answers to the questions are all trending neutral.
Based on some unofficial (aka not qualitative) experiences, I have found that when presented with a "goldilocks question" that guests will often answer "just right"/neutral despite having issues with the length.
Have any of you noticed this trend? Where you know something is too short or too long, but the evals trend otherwise? And does anyone have suggestions to get a better response out of a "goldilocks question" by perhaps any kind of re-wording and such?
Thanks!
Scott
