[civsa] Parking for Events

Hi Trent -- a few years ago I worked with our campus marketing department
and purchased sandwich boards (the white kind you see outside of downtown
restaurants) for about $100 each. The ones I purchased hold inserts (1 on
each side) that we have specially printed with our messages. So they are
branded, look professional, and we have a series of messages appropriate
for the events -- Valpo Visit Day Parking with arrows pointing different
ways, Admitted Student Day Check-In, Event Parking, etc. We have set
requirements for their use, e.g. the ones with a "straight ahead" arrow
must have a sign on the reverse side that has only the University shield in
the center. We make sure not to have too many out so it doesn't look
cluttered, but enough to guide folks.
Since we've been using these, we've had very few visitors complaining about
not finding the event. Such a blessing! And definitely worth the
investment. The other campus departments that were skeptical now love them
and borrow them often (we charge a fee which they get back when the signs
are returned intact). These other departments are required to follow the
sign design rules that have been established.
The only negatives: they're large and a bit clumsy, so setting them up
takes two people and a vehicle that they will all fit in. If it's really
windy, they may blow over. We've had three stolen (one was found in a dorm
room, if you can believe it....) so we no longer put them out the day
before the event.
Other than these few negatives, these signs have been a terrific investment
for us because our campus is so spread out and guests can easily see the
"next" sign up ahead of them.
Good luck! Barb LIeske
