We use our carousel interview process to hire for several positions in our office (tour guides, bloggers, and interns) and I’ve attached the basic carousel interview schedule. Everyone goes through three rounds; personal interviews, group process, and host room (evaluations  attached). Professional staff evaluate the group process, but we use seniors, admission staff, and partners across campus to help with the individual interviews. Each group is led to the different rotations by students who are already involved in our office and who are applying for leadership student positions (Lead Guides and Interns). This allows us to see them in a leadership role.

We compile all of this information and then sit in a room and decided who we want to offer a position to based on several different people’s evaluation of the student. Interns are invited back for a second round interview which includes a 10 minute presentation to the admission staff (topic of their choice).

Morning, Trent!

I attached all of my interview rubrics and interview questions. During our group interview process we have three different breakouts that each last twenty minutes. I listed them below with a little context of what happens during each one. Let me know if you have further questions!

General Question Room
These are your basic interview questions. The questions are led by tour guides on my leadership team and we ask popcorn style. We typically have 2-3 tour guides from the leadership team in the room scoring the applicants.

Tough Question Room
These are the questions our tour guides are asked regularly on tours that are harder to message. We are looking for someone who can stay calm, not freeze up, and still give an articulate answer. This is my favorite part of the group process. I always walk way with some quotes from what applicants have said that you would never want mentioned on a real tour.

Mock Tour
The applicants are partnered up with a current tour guide and given instructions to walk for about 15 minutes and give a mock tour. We assure them they are not being tested on facts (we can train that), but encourage them to share their stories and favorite memories. Obviously just looking for authenticity and how well they connect with the "prospective student".

At the end of the evening, the applicants scoring in the top half are invited back for an individual interview.

In a few weeks we are hosting our very first group interview for those that want to be a tour guide for next year. At the group interview we are going to split them in a smaller group and then do a few different activities to see how they respond to situations and scenarios that we put them in, see how they communicate with one another, etc.

I want to have my head tour guides be inside each group and assist in evaluating the prospective guides. Do any of you have a sheet or anything like that that you use to evaluate the prospective guides? (Hopefully that question makes sense). But if you could share anything that you have that you use to evaluate prospective guides during your group interview process it would be greatly appreciated. Have a good day everyone!
