[civsa] Rate of payment for Ambassadors?

Hi all:
This response is more to address structure and strategy than pay rates -
particularly since the SF Bay Area is way out of sync with most of the
country in terms of cost of living and rates of pay. As such, the
University's recommended wage scale for student workers for 2014-15 ranges
from $13.25 to $19.00 per hour, based upon a combination of
responsibility/skill required, and number of quarters worked.
We have separate staffs for traditional tour guide and ambassador roles,
though both are employed under the same departmental umbrella of
"Undergraduate Admission, Financial Aid, and Visitor Information Services
[VIS]":
. We have 60-90 Tour Guides during the academic year who staff the
Visitor Center and lead a slate of different tours (general, prospective
student, golf cart, groups, Engineering, Arts & Humanities, New
Employees).
. We have a staff of 8-12 Admission Associates (paraprofessional
students that are roughly the equivalent of what most schools consider
"ambassadors") who lead the majority of our Admission Information
Sessions, and respond to admission phone calls and email. Beyond this, 4
of them serve as Diversity Associates, working on outreach programs and
initiatives.
Our Tour Guide salaries are based upon number of hours worked, and range
from $14.00 - $16.00 with 50-cent raises at every 200-hour benchmark. (Our
student managers, who have increased roles and responsibilities, make a
flat rate of $16.00/hr when on manager duty/shifts, but earn the tiered
hourly rate when doing "normal" tour guide duties.)
This system has worked very well for us, both in terms of retention and
motivation. We tend to hold on to our guides. Many of the guides really
pay attention to the seniority rankings, and it's a great impetus for
students to work during the summer and other breaks, when they can really
rack up hours.

We also have "benchmark" awards for guides who reach 800 or 1000 hours
worked. They carry more tradition and status than actual value - a
Stanford golf umbrella at 800 hours, and a surprise (staff's choice) for
the rare attainment of 1000.
Our Admission Associates make $15.00-$16.00
I hope this may be helpful. We'd love to hear your experiences in terms of
structure and strategies and welcome any questions about ours.
Cheers,
DJ

Subject: [civsa] Rate of payment for Ambassadors?
Hello All-
Although we have historically been unable to pay our team of Ambassadors,
I am putting together a proposal for a tuition reduction for them. If you
wouldn't mind sharing...
How large is your Ambassador/tour guide staff?
How much do you pay them per semester or year?
And is payment contingent upon a minimum level of
requirements/tours/events, etc?
Thank you in advance for your help!
