Hi Lauren,
We went through a similar proposal about 5 years ago, moving our ambassador positions from volunteer to paid positions. Our student worker positions have different levels (A, B, C) and therefore different pay rates based upon different factors. Our ambassadors are considered premiere student representatives since they lead tours, conduct phone outreach in spring to admitted students, and generally serve our prospective student population in different ways. So their grade level is B, which is about mid-level. They are paid an hourly rate. Payment is based on actual hours worked. Our ambassadors rotate through serving one of our daily tours (10:00 or 2:00 Monday - Friday, 10:00 on Saturdays), and our special group visits where we have groups of up to 50 high school students visiting at one time.
In changing from a volunteer to paid system, we noticed a dramatic difference in students showing up for their assigned tours. That was a significant benefit for us because we have a very small staff. If someone didn't show for a tour, a counselor had to conduct it, and that is not an ideal situation. Plus our ambassadors are called on quite frequently by other university offices to work special events and lead tours for other visitors. It really has developed into quite an ideal student worker position for us and the students. We incorporate volunteer activities off campus and host a couple of appreciation events, too. Overall we're really pleased with the change to a paid system as it has increased students' investment in the program and how they perceive the importance of their involvement.
I hope that helps!

Subject: [civsa] Rate of payment for Ambassadors?
Hello All-
Although we have historically been unable to pay our team of Ambassadors, I am putting together a proposal for a tuition reduction for them. If you wouldn't mind sharing...
How large is your Ambassador/tour guide staff?
How much do you pay them per semester or year?
And is payment contingent upon a minimum level of requirements/tours/events, etc?
Thank you in advance for your help!
