Hello, CIVSA!
Today I have two separate topics in which I'm looking for guidance:
1. Students assigned to your Admissions lobby. This year, Bellarmine University added a new component to our (unpaid) Ambassador program. Each Ambassador worked one 30-minute "office shift" in Admissions. They worked either right before our info session/tour started or right after it returned. Their primary duty was to mingle with our visiting families. After taking an end-of-year survey, we found that the Ambassadors really liked the addition of office hours but that they felt underutilized. As a small university, we often have campus visits with only one family signed up, or maybe no one shows that day. Do any of you use (unpaid) Ambassadors in your lobby throughout the day? If so, how do you fill their time? What do they do if no families show up? How do you design this time so that students feel invested/that they are contributing?
2. Working with a Student Leadership Team. This past year, I worked with five fantastic student leaders who ran our Ambassador program. One improvement I'd like to make for next year is to make their weekly Leadership Team meetings feel like a "safer space" for differing opinions. They're great student leaders because they have great ideas, but oftentimes they have very contrasting ideas. :) Does anyone have tips for helping your student leaders enter and leave (busy, sometimes stressful) meetings on a more positive note? How do you help them set the tone at the beginning of the year for respecting opinions and dealing with constructive criticism? I know this question is a little outside of our usual topics, but if you have any advice that works well at your institution, I'd love to hear about it!
Thanks, everyone!
Carrie
