[civsa] wheelchair use

Hi All,
We used to have our own wheelchair that was donated by a local medical supply company. I loaned it out once at a Saturday Tour and never saw it again. If we have guests who request a wheelchair, I borrow one from Medical Compliance now. I request to hold their driver's license and give it back to them on return of the wheelchair. Sad, but true. I don't get any pushback from that so it's not too uncommon. Our tour guides do not push it and they just alter the route a bit to accommodate it.

Hi,
We do have a manual wheelchair. I actually lent it to a student today. Families can request it on the reservation form for a daily tour (in the accomodations section) or can ask for it upon arrival. Liability is an issue. We have been told we are not allowed to be the power behind the chair. Guides are aware of accessible routes. We do allow guests at our department special events request it. Occassionally, another area may ask to borrow it but it is meant for tour takers. It gets used about 6-10 times a year, I think.
Today's group was from an Educational Talent Search program and the student and the chaperone were very appreciative of the offer of the wheelchair. The student has recently fractured his ankle and was not doing well on crutches.

Hello All,
I am wondering if anyone does an e-newsletter that is sent regularly to faculty and staff about the visit programs happening on campus? I was thinking of doing a monthly recap that would go out? Visit stats, locations of visitors, etc...
I'm thinking that it would highlight which faculty were helpful and would maybe entice some other faculty into helping when they see the recognition that their staff members are receiving?
If you have one, can you share your thoughts and or latest issue?
Thank you,

Hi CiVSA,
We are currently re-evaluating how we assist guests with mobility issues. Do any of you have a wheelchair that you loan to guests? If so, would you please provide answers to the following questions?
1. What is your process for guests acquiring the wheelchair?
2. How often does the wheelchair get utilized?
3. Do you offer a wheelchair option when your guests are at alternate locations (such as on an event day)?
4. Any other thoughts on the issue?
Thanks!

Hello Christy,
We are located in an urban environment with steep hills and quite a few stairs. When I arrived to UW Tacoma, I asked these exact questions. I was surprised to learn that due to liability, we cannot and do not loan wheelchairs. If someone requires an alternate tour route, we can make that accommodation, but we cannot offer the actual wheelchair. I suggest you check-in with your risk management office for their insight.
Best,
Megan

We also have been told we can't own a wheelchair due to liability. If anyone has had luck working with their risk/legal department to create a waiver I would love to see a copy and chat.
