Hi Jessica -- at Valparaiso University we provide a meal card for each
admitted student who visits the Admission Office. Not their family members,
and not prospective students who've not applied for admission. This has
helped us keep the budget under control. We revisited the topic at our
staff meeting last week and decided to keep going this way.
We do feed *all* of the visitors participating in a structured visit day
program.
Before starting this program for the admitted "daily visitors", our Dining
Services Director worked with us to establish a set cost -- an average --
that our account would be charged for each of the meal cards that goes
through the line. We give the admitted student a small card, the size of a
business card, that has the directions on it. The student takes it to the
Dining Services Office which is at the front of our dining hall, and they
trade it in for a bar-coded plastic card that is actually scanned at the
register. The advantage with this is that the student (or usually the
parent) can ask questions of the office staff about special dietary needs
and such. If the meal costs more than the amount allowed on the card, the
student pays the overage in cash.
This program has worked out very well for us. Good luck! Barb
