[civsa] Tours during Finals week?

Greetings!
Here at the University of Arizona, we are pretty much touring year-round, rain or shine.
During Finals Week, while we recognize that our tour guides need to focus on their studies, there still is a demand for campus tours, albeit on a much smaller scale. We decrease the amount of tours we offer from 11 tours a week to four. We then ask our Ambassadors to sign up for these shifts, and as added incentive, we offer a $20 meal card to our student union. Right now, all of our Finals Week shifts are filled.
There is a strict policy however, that no campus tours are offered on Dead Day (some of your institutions may call it Reading Day), which is the one day between when general education ends, and Finals Week begins. This is a gift to our Ambassadors, and encouragement for them to focus on their studies. If there is a special request however, I dust off my tennis shoes and will provide the tour myself.
To answer's DJ's questions about the various breaks - this is when we need to get creative...
Because the UA is primiarly a residential campus, many of our students will go home for Winter Break, Spring Break, and the summer. We do have a high demand of tours during these times as well. We offer payment for these tours ($15 per tour, plus a bonus meal card), and during Winter and Spring Break, we cover mileage costs for Ambassadors driving down from the Phoenix area (a two hour drive). We had Winter Tours covered in no time, but Spring Break was only filled at the last possible minute as many Ambassadors saw their ambitious travel/vacation plans fall apart. Summer Tours are currently a work in progress, please wish me luck :)
In regards to Holiday Weekends, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc... we don't offer campus tours on the Monday in which the holiday falls, as well as the preceeding Saturday. We try to honor any VIP or special requests and provide the Ambassadors with a $20 meal card.
I hope this information helps and I hope all of you are having a great weekend!
Scott

Hi all:
Similar to what Ebony indicated at OSU, at Stanford our student guides are on a regular, quarterly assigned tour schedule from Weeks 2-9 of each academic quarter; during the first week and finals week (as well as breaks between quarters), we are “on sign-ups,” and generally don’t have a problem securing enough guides to sign up to give tours (though Spring Break is a distinct challenge – due to the volume of visitors to guides signed up).
Would be curious how others deal with the conundrum that most of us get our biggest crowds when school is out (Spring Break, summer, holiday weekends), which is also when are guides are least available.

Subject: [civsa] Tours during Finals week?
Hi everyone,
Greetings from sunny and warm Florida! Traditionally we have not given tours during the first week of classes each semester because of the unusual “craziness” on campus that week. Florida Gulf Coast University is considering not giving tours during finals week. Can you let me know if you do give tours during finals week and, if you do, is it a decreased tour schedule (ie – do you offer fewer tours each day, etc.).
Thanks all!
Tami
