[civsa] Translators

University of Florida follows the trend that seems to be emerging - we don't hire interpreters for language barriers, but do contract ASL interpreters if a family contacts us in advance. We use a local disability resource organization, which (unfortunately) isn't cheap, but they're easy to work with and understand when we call last-minute.

I do have a spreadsheet of all my current ambassadors and any languages they are fluent in. If a family asks for a specific language and we have a guide capable, I try to secure them but make no guarantees since they're all volunteers. Hope this helps!

Hello CIVSA members,

I am curious if you provide on-campus translators if visitors request? If so, what is the criteria that must be met in order for you to arrange for a translator (ie. Parent does not speak English, but student does)? Do you ever deny anyone a translator if they request it?

· Who do you hire to be translator?

o Do you hire an outside independent contractor or use students who are studying foreign languages to help with translation?

Thanks for sharing your practices!
