At the University of North Florida, we also do not hire or provide translators for language barriers. We have a sign language interpreter that we will provide for hearing impaired guests. She comes from our Disability Resource Center and we do not have to pay extra for her services at this time.

Hello CIVSA members,

I am curious if you provide on-campus translators if visitors request? If so, what is the criteria that must be met in order for you to arrange for a translator (ie. Parent does not speak English, but student does)? Do you ever deny anyone a translator if they request it?

* Who do you hire to be translator?

o Do you hire an outside independent contractor or use students who are studying foreign languages to help with translation?

Thanks for sharing your practices!

Hi Lisa,
UT Dallas does not hire translators for language barriers, but we will hire an sign language interpreter for a student who is hearing impaired. These interpreters are independent contractors and not university related at this time.

Thanks,
Dee Lambert
