I deeply feel for the students that were singled out, but I also feel for the tour guide and the visit team because it seems like they had no way to interfere because it happened without their knowledge. But even if it did happen in the presence of a university ambassador (tour guide, admission counselor, staff, faculty, current student...), do you have policy and culture in place that encourages your students to speak up on micro (and macro) aggressions? Do you do trainings, role playing, bring in speakers, facilitate discussions (if so do you have help from other people on your campus)? CSU has a principles of community principles of community which I would imagine laid the groundwork for this discussion by clearly establishing their guiding principles of community and enable them to work through this situation with greater clarity. Does your institution and/or office also have something similar? If so, can you share? If you haven't yet, I encourage you to read the statement from Tony Frank, watch the policy cam video and listen to the 911 call. A colleague of mine I think said it best, "As educators in higher ed who have direct contact with families, we need be intentional on knowing how to handle these situations, and be aware of what is going on at other campuses.... this could happen anywhere." And don't be fooled, this IS happening everywhere. I'd like to use the CIVSA hive mind to ensure I'm having the best conversations/trainings possible to prepare them (and myself!) to be better students and human beings. https://safety.colostate.edu/ Shanna Pomager Sr. Associate Director of Admission & Campus Visit Manager Undergraduate Admission DU Alumna 1999 BA, 2008 MA 303-871-7645 | Shanna.Pomager at du.edu | www.du.edu/admission [cid:image011.jpg at 01D16315.20412BA0] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... They are meant to be short programs that orient families quickly to the campus and our offerings. Our Agenda is as follows: 10:00 AM Check - in and Breakfast 10:30 AM Undergraduate Admission and Financial Aid Presentation 10:30 AM Transfer Admission and Financial Aid Presentation 11:10 AM Student Guided Tour of Campus (only the one side of campus and includes Freshman Residence Hall) 12:00 PM Academic and Activities Fair (tables set up in our Athletic/Recreation Center) - well attended by our colleges/departments and organizations so families can walk around and speak to several representatives based upon their questions. Between the 3 programs we usually have about 410 rising senior families visiting (we do get underclassmen and some transfers) of which 57% apply and ultimately 19% enroll. This compares to 3 Fall Weekend Open Houses (running 8:30 am to 2pm) where we usually have 570 families that attend with 57% applying and 75% enrolling. As we do not have a Large Spring Rising Senior Open House, these are becoming more popular and a great way to encourage students to return for a more in-depth look in either Fall or during the Spring Accepted Student Days. Any questions, please let me know. More than happy to share! Laura N. We call them "Accelerated Transfer Days" and the schedule is as follows: 9:30 a.m. Check-in begins (students register for the event and are called ahead of time to review what time they may be attending and what, if any items, they need to bring and are asked general questions about their academics if they have not yet submitted transcripts) 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Application lab open 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Campus Tours available 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Transfer counseling and credit evaluations Academic advising and registration for classes Financial Aid counseling Student Life representative available 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Lunch available Typically while the student is on tour is when the Transfer Team reviews, makes decisions and prepares the transfer credit evaluation; they then meet with the department advisors to register for classes, get their ID's, review financial aid, etc. We keep these small on purpose - typically 25-30 transfer students per day and we usually host them 1 per month throughout June-July-August; the yield is typically over 95% as less than 1% is denied admission (due to our pre-event calls). We do not currently do this for Traditional freshman but at a prior institution where I worked, we ran a similar program to the schedule above. Any questions please let me know! Good Luck :) Laura N. I'm emailing to see if anyone out there has a position open, opening, or a future posting coming up soon working with campus visits, tour guides or something of that nature. Some things that he has done during his time at LMU. 1. Redesigned our Self-Guided Campus Tour Map 2. Piloted a new mentorship program within our Tour Guide program 3. Gave around 350 campus tours within two years 4. Coordinated overnight visits 5. Summer Programming Coordinator, Summer Tour Guide Coordinator, Transfer Student Coordinator.
