At Miami University (19,000 total students, OH, public) we do out of state
prospective student receptions primarily in the Fall (but a few select in
the Spring as well). We do not do any yield receptions. (We have in the
past but not the last few years.) As such, we don't measure yield from the
prospective receptions. We host between 7000-8000 visitors on campus in the
spring for our 10 on campus yield events, so our focus is to drive the
campus visit and experience for yield.
For the prospective student receptions, our regional recruiters in the
areas handle most of the logistical elements - as they understand the
market better than the on-campus team. They will generally select a
location either in a restaurant, hotel conference room or sometimes a high
school auditorium. Timing tends to be in the evening during the week or
Sunday afternoon. If at a restaurant or hotel, light
refreshments/cookies/desserts are served. We ask that students register for
the event (so we can confirm quantities and space limitations.)
*Agenda:*
Welcome - by the regional recruiter
Information session - Powerpoint presentation by the regional recruiter
Q&A - they will often times try to get a few recent alumni from the area to
form a panel to answer questions from prospective students and parents.
Size of these events run from 10 to 50 although some have been around 100
in larger venues and cities. Events are usually no longer than 1 to 1.5
hours.
Hope this helps, Jaime.
Amy
Love and Honor,
