[civsa] Snapchat Geofilters

Hi Wyatt,

We used geofilters during our open house event (attendance of ~600 students, not including their friends and families) last semester. It took a lot of advertisement on campus for students to go online and use the geofilters. However, our exposure on Snapchat exceeded nearly four times those in attendance, so it was worth it for it being our first time using Snapchat. We usually use Instagram or Twitter, as our student population is a bit older (avg. age is 29). Our Office of Admissions has a coordinator who designs all of our marketing pieces and manages our online presence. He works with several departments and operates as a liaison between Admissions and our Office of Communications. So, the project was led by a staff member.

The route we used to send students to Snapchat included telling them during check in, having the dj announce that we are on social media throughout the event, and signs posted around the event area on campus. We use contests (very generic – like “take a picture, use the hashtag, we will draw for winners each hour and announce via dj and on Snapchat” type of contests) and just giving shout outs to those who post. That leads others to post.

I hope that this helps!

Thanks,
Tia

Hey CIVSA,

I would like to design a handful of geofilters to be used on Snapchat during Preview Day events next year.

If your university uses Snapchat Geofilters:
    1. Does your marketing and design office oversee that, or does your admissions/event office?
    2. Who designs your filters? Do you pay a student to get creative, or do you assign the project to a staff member?

Are there other creative ways to get your brand out there while students are snapping pictures of themselves on campus?

Stay Classy,
Wyatt
