So, we have a 168-slide slideshow (actually, just jpegs in file folder) that alternates Fordham images with Fordham facts. The facts slides use the University's branding guidelines. The facts are sometimes self-serving (i.e., admission rates or number of varsity programs) but are more often fun -- trivia like famous alums, how we got our mascot, why our Bronx campus is called "Rose Hill," etc. In addition to playing in our lobbies, we also show this slideshow ahead of our information session -- something to keep people entertained while waiting for the presentation to start. I update the slideshow files twice a year, at the same time that we update our PowerPoint presentation and Student Profile sheets -- that way, the data is consistent (if not always up-to-date). Hope everyone is having a great Monday! We are currently in the process of planning for our Annual team training to take place in August. This year we are going with a Harry Potter theme and finding the magic of stories. That being said, as a fun/competitive aspect of our training we are looking to host a Triwizard Tournament. We are looking for ideas and inspiration of teambuilding games/competitions we can use for our three tasks. That said, we developed a super effective peer-based recognition program that has transformed the work performance and moral of our College Ambassadors. We have "extra step" nomination cards (see attached) that the CAs can fill out for each other when they see one of their colleagues going the "extra step" (staying late after a weekend tour to answer a guests' questions, covering extra shifts in a pinch, etc). I left it up to the CAs to define what going the "extra step" meant and to keep it special, and they've done a great job at it. We read off the nomination cards at our all-staff meetings and the nominated CAs get a special bootprint pin to wear on their polo collar. It's a fantastic, very cheap (a box of 100 pins cost $50) way of public recognition for the little things they do to keep our office running smoothly, they wear their pins with pride, and it helps newbies know which CAs to use as role models. At Ohio State we track the number of tours an Ambassador gives and hand out awards once certain thresholds are reached. The following is our breakdown: 25 Tours - Branded Water bottle (University logo with "University Ambassadors) -- we buy these in bulk and store them so the cost ends up being about $5 per bottle 75 Tours - Golden Shoelaces -- we purchase these from Amazon for $3.20 a pair 100 Tours - Lapel pin with the number 100 -- bought these in bulk two years ago, will probably last us 10 years 150 Tours - platinum shoes -- we buy baby shoes and spray paint from Target/Walmart, costs about $6 per pair Most Ambassadors earn a water bottle before they graduate, about 50% earn shoelaces and maybe only 15% earn a pin. Costs to start this type of program are high because we bought everything in bulk, but we are not spending more than $50 each year to replenish our stock of shoelaces and shoes. We have also added levels are different times, so when the program started we only had the 75 and 150 marks. About 3 years ago, we had extra funds at the end of the year so we added in the water bottles and then 2 years ago had funding to purchase the pins. I hope this helps! -- Nidhi Browell Senior Program Coordinator-Campus Visits Office of Undergraduate Admissions? 3080 C Ohio Union, 1739 N. We also ask students to write a short essay to answer the question, ?If you were speaking with a prospective student and his/her parents, what would you identify as the most compelling reasons to attend the University of Kentucky and why?? Our interview process is a short one primarily because we have a volunteer-based student recruiting organization, from where we pull many of our applicants for the paid position. Their work as a volunteer is often a good predictor of the dedication and success they would have in the paid position. Interviews are conducted in groups of 3-4 applicants. Those applicants are interviewed by our panel that includes 2-4 members of our student leadership team, our associate director, and myself. We ask questions about their involvement on campus, why they want to be a tour guide, their customer service experience, and more. We have a set of scenario-based questions we?ve heard on tours that we ask them on the spot such as ?Do you have to go Greek to fit in at UK?? or ?I?ve heard this is a suitcase school; is that true?? or ?What is there to do on the weekends?? Finally, we ask them ahead of time to prepare a 2-3 minute spiel on two different areas of campus. They will give this ?tour stop? in front of the panel while other applicants step outside the room. We invite them to treat the panel as their own tour group, so this allows us to better see how comfortable they are talking in front of strangers. I hope this information helps a bit. I?d be happy to talk more by phone if I can be of any other assistance. I also believe this topic has been covered in the listserv before, so you may be interested in reviewing the listserv/forum archives in the Members Only section at civsa.org. We haven't completed committed to our process this fall, yet. Our process last Spring was also too time-consuming for the quarter. Loving all the ideas! Last Spring, we posted the job on our website for about 3 weeks. They needed a resume, cover letter with references, and availability schedule. This year, they will need a resume and a letter of rec from a CWU staff or faculty member or from a high school teacher (for freshman). This year, we are also contacting our on-campus departments to see if they want to nominate any students to apply for the position. Because we had a large number of students interested in the position last spring (about 50), the next step was to close the application and host an information session where our current Student Ambassadors described the program and our expectations. Our program requires a lot of training, so we like students to know that going in. Step Two: Group Interviews Applicants that were still interested after the info session then signed up for the group interview session. This is a two-hour evening session where we played team-building games (organized by our Student Ambassadors) and we also observed players' (applicants') interactions-super fun night! Our team chose around 20 applicants from this group to interview. (Note to self: that was too many, so we will cut it down to about 15.) Step Three: (Previously-Interview with panel and short mock tour)-Now, WOW US TIME! Last year, the interview and mock tour were the final steps. However, this year, we have decided to go a different route because it was too time-consuming. This year, each applicant of the 15 or so chosen will have up to 5 minutes to "WOW" the panel, which will include up to 2 Student Ambassadors who hold Coordinator positions, myself (Vis Prog Supervisor), and our Assistant Director. Applicants can share a talent, tell us what they can bring to the team, juggle, etc. - their call. We will cut the group to 10 after this session. This year, I will limit how many Student Ambassadors have a say in who gets an interview-it was hard for some to be unbiased about friends and significant others when we let several of them be involved in this process last spring. Step Four: Interview and Short Mock Tour Interviews and a short mock tour follow: interview team will include up to two Student Ambassadors, myself, and our AD. This year, we plan to hire about 6 new Student Ambassadors. After this step, we will call their references and make a final decision. Side note: While we want more diversity among majors, we have found that the intensity level of some majors prohibits students from being able to complete training for our program :( Hope this helps! We plan to continue to fine tune it more this fall. Yes, but they must contact dining services and arrange for coupons. Each student using a coupon to buy food. Coupon value is $10. If they go over $10, the student has to pay out of pocket. The cashier gives the lead chaperone a total after all students have gone through the line. If a student spends less than $10, the charge will reflect only what they actually spent. The coupon can only be used at the cafeteria-style dining hall (not at the Marketplace next to it). 2. Do they get a discount? During the summer, dining services sometimes offers coupons at $6.50 each because the menu is limited, the hours of operation are limited, and usually a camp of football players or cheerleaders are also funneling through the dining hall. 3.
