[civsa] Bus Tours - Rutgers University

Hello all!

Here at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, we have a 5-campus structure due to how we've grown over the years. Students take buses between the campuses, and having the diversity of these 5 "neighborhood" campuses is actually one of the most fun parts of being a student at RU.

In an effort to help our visitors understand Rutgers as a whole and see how our five campuses work together, our primary tour is actually a bus tour throughout the campuses. We contract with Academy, so on a typical tour day we have four 54-passenger Academy buses lined up outside of our Visitor Center. Students give the tour by directing people's attention right or left and they use the bus's microphone. They make a stop at an academic building to see a classroom, and also at our "mock room" in one of the residence halls. We're toying with different ways to incorporate a little more walking into the tour, as this is something some of our visitors have expressed a desire for in their survey responses.

Overall, bus tours work very well for us. The bus drives the same route every time (and our guides actually have great relationships with the Academy drivers!). The students are trained on what to say at each part of the tour, how to handle red lights, potential traffic and detours, and how to keep a bus full of people engaged. Hilary,

Here at Liberty University we incorporate four 14 passenger mini-buses into our tour.  These smaller buses do not require any different type of license to drive. As such our tour guides, over 21 years of age, drive our guests as part of the tour.

Our campus is self-contained for the most part as it originally was built on property on the edge of our home city.  While the city has grown to meet the campus our tour does not spend time on 'city streets'.

I've attached a presentation that was shared at the CiVSA Nashville Conference for review and a few photos that will hopefully provide additional information.

These are smaller vehicles than have been discussed so far in this thread, but may provide a bit of help.  I know that VA Tech operates a 30 'ish' passenger bus to move guests from their welcome center to the heart of campus for the tour. Linda and Dee may be a good resrouce as well.

Hey everyone,

I'm just curious, does your school give bus tours? We just purchased a 30 passenger bus, and I'm trying to wrap my head around incorporating bus tours of some kind into our daily tour schedule.

Any help as far as scheduling and logistics would be much appreciated, thanks!
