Our ambassadors work an average of 2-4 hours per week and we typically have about 35.

I am loving all of these responses, thank you! How many hours were your students working each and how many students did you have?

Importance: Low

We have done this very thing here at Concordia. When I started here 5 years ago we had separate staffs for all areas and I specifically managed the front desk/reception staff and the tour guides/ambassadors. About 3 years ago I combined both of those staffs together under the student ambassador umbrella. I love the fact that any student I have working for me is capable of giving a tour if needed (because we all know that things happen at times we aren't expecting them!). I also found that my student staff did a better job with answering questions at the front desk and over the phone, because they had such a vast knowledge from being a tour guide as well.

The one mistake I did make (only for a semester though!) was that I scheduled them all together without assigning who was primarily responsible for each area at any given time. I figured it allowed the flexibility to work it out amongst those who were also on that shift as to who wanted to cover tours vs. phones. This failed because they all ended up huddling around the front desk all the time and there was too much discussion about who was covering what. Now they are all on the same schedule, but I assign them to a role. It doesn't mean they won't be called on to help with the other roles, but they know where I want them to start for the shift.

Hope all goes well for you!

Amy

I have been with Hanover and overseeing the Student Ambassador program for 11 years. When I first started there were student workers (office help) and tour guides. At the end of my second year I wanted a more cohesive and united group so everyone became student ambassadors. Now, all of our student ambassadors are trained to give tours and are expected that tours will be top priority when they are in the office. They are all expected to work our events and host for our overnight programs. All ambassadors are also trained to do general office duties (mailings, phone calls, etc.). Within the ambassador pool, there is the option to do other tasks that they have a particular interest in or skill set for (data entry, front desk coverage and social media).

Making the change has made a positive difference in the program.

Hello,
Right now we have our students workers in the office in three separate silos (tour guides, callers, front office data entry/phones/mailing). We are considering combining forces and cross training so all student workers can do all tasks. Hs anyone done this successfully? Pros and cons?

Blessings,
