[civsa] Admissions Presentations Before or After Tour

Greetings CIVSA Land and Jennifer! How many of your Ambassadors are incredibly distracted by Pokemon Go? How about staff?

IMHO, the presentation before the tour is the way to go. At least if you are at a big school for me. When I started at the U, the presentation was after the tour, for various and questionable reasons - but one of the issues we kept running into was on days where we had multiple tours. In some cases, families from tour A had to wait a few minutes for tour B to come back. And on a busy day, tours A and B both had to wait for tour C to come back. We didn't want to make the Admissions Counselor do the presentation 3 times (it was only 15 minutes back then, but I since expanded it to 30), plus we didn't want to run the risk of a group coming in the middle of the tour presentation.

My views are that if we can front load them with relevant information and get them excited to see the campus "Now that you know what it takes to get in, who's excited to see campus?!" that's more effective. Plus for those of us with large schools, students and parents are tired after all that a-walkin' they're ready to sit down, have lunch, decompress, talk about what they've seen, etc. First impressions are great, final impressions are forever.

Last note - having your presentation at the beginning gives you a little bit a of a buffer zone for those lost souls who couldn't check in on time and wander in. We had a big problem with people arriving late and missing the tour because there was no pre-tour session. Now, while we still have latecomers, they might miss a few bits of admissions info, but they wont miss their tour.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Scott

Hi, all!

The Colorado School of Mines Admissions office is exploring some new ways to revamp our campus tour program and are curious to see who offers their advisement session before the tour versus after the tour. What are the benefits/challenges of what your school currently does?

We have always presented to the group AFTER the campus tour but have recently received some feedback suggesting that we meet with the students and families before they go out with our Ambassadors.

Thanks for the help! Have a great week!
