[civsa] Slack?

I use Slack within my master's program to communicate with fellow students, which I find very useful. As a communications tool, it feels much more conversational and not as clunky as sending or receiving group-based emails. The format favors short, scannable messages over long paragraphs, which may be more effective when communicating with students.

While the Slack Channels that I use are focused on my academic program (upcoming assignments, general course questions, hiring opportunities, best practices, etc.), I feel that the following Channel-types would be helpful for communicating with our students:

-Upcoming available shifts/trading shifts
-Weekly schedules
-Campus updates (i.e. construction, new policies, etc.)
-Office-wide memos
-Campus events
-Training materials (Slack allows you to post PDFs)
-Professional development opportunities
-Post-graduation hiring opportunities

Thanks!
Nick

Subject: [civsa] Slack?

Hi all,

At conference I hear a number of people mention "Slack" and using it for office purposes with your student teams. If you use Slack, can you tell me a little bit more about how you use it and if it has worked for you? Do you find it more informative and effective than e-mail? (I'm sure my students are any different than anyone else's, but they DO NOT read messages....) What are the "Channels" you use on your team, etc?

Basically, tell me more!

Tami
