Hi Susan! (and everyone else following this chain...!)

At the University of North Florida, we do entertain middle school groups. If they make their reservation on a date that is not already reserved, I get them in here. We don't normally give them an admissions presentation. We MIGHT show them a fun video (flash mob, perhaps), and then they will take the tour. Most of the time, the bus will call me when they arrive, the tour guide goes out and gets on the bus for the trip to the main campus, and they get the fun tour - about an hour. They don't see the inside of the dorm. They get to learn how to SWOOP! We try to keep it fun and make it a fun place to come back to!

Good morning!

I am the Visitor Center Coordinator for Sam Houston State University and my job is primarily to set up all group tours. We have had to scale back the number of Middle School groups this year since we were having to turn away high school groups that wanted to come. I limit just one Middle School group a week now. (I have to turn away many, many, many schools!)

Our Middle School tour consists of having one or two of our tour guides to board their buses upon arrival. They tell the bus driver where to turn during the driving tour. We do two big loops around campus while the guides point out different things on campus and put it on their level. They explain that it is just like a little community within another city. Once they finish the driving tour, the students are unloaded and given a restroom break. We bring them into our Visitor Center where I promote going to college and studying hard, etc. I also show them our video and then the tour guide takes them back out and gives them a short (30 minutes or so) walking tour through the middle of campus where a lot of our students hang out between classes. We give each student an admissions brochure and a sticker so they can remember their tour of our campus!

Groups have the option of eating on campus, however, it is at their expense. Here is a typical itinerary for a Middle School tour:

9:30 am Arrive on campus
9:30-9:55 Bus tour of campus
10-10:10 Restroom break
10:15-10:40 Short walking tour
10:45-11:15 Visitor Center presentation and DVD
11:15 Walk to Paw Print for lunch

I hope this helps and good luck with reinstating your K-8 groups!

Susie

Hello Everyone! Our school is in the very very very early stages of possibly revamping the service we provide for K-8 field trips and campus tours. Could any of you who coordinate and/or lead these kinds of field trips/tours give me an idea of how your program is set-up? For example, do you only coordinate the times and locations and then it is up to the group to provide their own transportation or do you have staff and transportation that takes them around campus? Any information like this would be very helpful as we explore how we would like to structure this portion of our tour program.

Thank you!
