[civsa] Tour without seeing a dorm

Our housing facilities are not a significant distance away, but they are on the outer edge of campus. One tactic that we employ is to frequently utilize our shuttle busses to transport the tour group back to the main part of campus. This not only alleviates issues with distance, but is also a great way to subliminally plant an image of convenience for students as it relates to your campus shuttle system. By putting the guests on the shuttle they get to experience a shuttle and see how easy it would be for their student to get back and forth. You take what may be seen as a negative (distance to housing) and turn it into a positive (convenience of shuttles for students).

Best,

Same here at UT Dallas. Because of the increase in new buildings on campus that we are incorporating into our tour, we decided to separate the tours. So now, we give general campus tours at 10am and 2pm, and res life staff members offer housing tours at 12pm and 12:30pm. This way, the morning guests can walk over right after the presentation and be finished by 12:30pm. The afternoon guests can come visit early and have time to leisurely make their way back to the Visitor Center for the afternoon tour visit. It took a while for the departments to be able to agree on our arrangement, but now it seems to be working out well and both areas are happy. :)

We also had negative comments when we did not include a residence hall on our tour route. What we are doing now, is telling them they can go for a residence life tour before or after our tour. Our Residence Life staff have hired a few students that will take anyone interested to two different styles of show rooms. I think they utilize those students for other duties while they are in the office.

Hello,

We are in the process of auditing our tour guides and taking a close look at what we are and are not showing on our tour. Since we are located in the heart of Atlanta and we offer a walking tour, we do not currently have time to show a residence hall. This is one of the aspects of our tour that families dislike the most and we are in the process of trying to find alternatives. Our housing options are not conveniently located near the tour route and would make our tour much longer than we would like if we were to incorporate them. Therefore, we are looking for ways to showcase our housing options without physically having to take visitors into a residence hall, and I would appreciate any feedback about how your campus may do this. If you do not physically take families into dorms, how do you meet student and family expectations? Do you show alternatives such as housing demonstrations or videos? If so, how is that approach received by your visitors?

Thank you so much for your feedback!

Best,
Elyse
