[civsa] Starting the VC at U. of Maryland

In 1990, when I was asked to start a visitor center on campus, erecting a new building was out of the question. So, since our Agriculture Department operated the Dairy Bar (selling their "home-made" ice cream!) on the ground floor of one of the campus buildings near our main entrance, we asked them to allow us to use a 9 ft. by 9 ft. area near the bar entrance for a 9 ft. long counter as our visitor center. We then asked the highway department to add "UMD Visitor Center" signs to our local roadways.
After seven years and a large degree of success in assisting visitors and prospective students and their families, the Ag. Dept. happened to move a segment of their operation to another part of our campus freeing up a larger area in their building. We then were allowed to move into that area we still use today, along with a small auditorium that is utilized by our Office of Admissions.
Having a place near our main campus entrance with ample parking nearby were two critical factors.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [civsa] New Visit Center Proposal
Hi All--
We are hoping to develop a new Visitor Center and I wanted to see if anyone had any past proposals that they have created when trying to implement this new development.
Thanks so much!
