[civsa] wheelchairs

Hi All,

Our Visitor Center does not have a wheelchair, however, when our guests let us know (a week ahead of time) that they would require one, we borrow one from our Medical Compliance office on campus. We did have one that was donated to us several years back and loaned it out during one of our Saturday events. We never saw it again. Now, if someone has requested one for one of our events, we hold their driver's license until the chair is returned. We don't get that many requests for wheelchairs. The guest is responsible for wheeling themselves through the tour or having someone else push them. I only have to make sure our shuttle is accessible if need be.

Hope this helps.

Hello Shanna!

I've never heard of a group being denied to own a chair due to risk issues? For the first few years of my term here, we were consistently called on the carpet for not having one, and then because the one we did start to use was rather old. We ended up buying two brand new ones. There was no policy or anything we had to go through.

If a guest needs a wheelchair, they usually will call us prior to their tour and request it. Very few times will someone request it the day of, and (knock on wood) we've never had requests for more than two chairs. The guest using the chair and whoever is in their party are responsible for pushing it around during their tours.

I never gave any thought to damage to the chair - I will need to think about drafting a policy for such an event. We don't expliclity say this, but it's assumed that any use of the chair is at the guests on risk. Probably should get that in writing.

Hope this helps!

Subject: [civsa] Wheelchairs

Hello from Denver, CO!

Over the last several years our administration has not allowed us to own wheelchairs due to "risk issues" (Is this common with many of you?). However, they are re-looking at the issue and have asked us to put together a wheelchair plan/policy and in light of these factors they will review our request.

Below are the questions they have asked. Could you let me know if you have a policy and if so how you would answer these questions and could you send me a copy of your plan?

* What is the maintenance plan/timeframe?

* How does a guest request use of the chair? What is the screening requirement (i.e. who is eligible to use the chair)? Who assists with pushing the wheelchair if such assistance is necessary? Who is responsible for damage to the wheelchair if damaged while the guest is using the chair?

* Will this wheelchair be available to other departments across campus? If so, who would be eligible? If the chair was damaged by another department or department guest, who will be responsible for repair or replacement?

* If an injury occurs while a guest is using the wheelchair, is the Office of Admissions aware that there may be a deductible or other costs associated with said claim/injury?

Thanks,
