[civsa] Campus Maps

About seven years ago we partnered with Facilities Management to develop a more user friendly map for visitors and guests. We are fortunate to have them as a partner because they are aware of impending changes on campus which is very helpful in keeping the map current. The initial time and effort to develop the map was somewhat extensive since we completely reinvented the map, making major changes. Facilities Management updates the file for us twice a year (usually in January and July). Hi Carrie -- An outside firm was hired to work on Valparaiso University's master plan  2 years ago which takes us to 2032.  They provided us with the files for a campus map so that we can add the buildings/changes to the map as the master plan is implemented.

I coordinated the creation of our previous campus map about 20 years ago and it's quite labor-intensive but worth it. We needed one -- badly -- and I hired a professional map company to take us through the process. We were not building a lot at the time, so I didn't worry about updates (and the updates ended up being quite simple to make, actually). But I would recommend you get bids from a variety of firms and then write into the project that the map be provided in an updateable format so you can make changes in-house. If they're not willing to do that, they're not the firm to use.

Another option: do you have a cartography program at Bellarmine? If so, could this be a student internship project? Good luck!  Barb
