[civsa] Length of tours

Hi All,

Our total tour time is 2 hours. After we check our guests in we show them to a presentation room where we have a slideshow going. At the top of the hour - when the tour officially starts - we have a short welcome and then an Admissions video. An Admissions representative speaks to the group for about fifteen minutes and then the tour takes off on one of our shuttles. The first part takes about 30 minutes and the rest takes almost an hour and a half. The shuttle gets them to the first stop - one of our newest housing facilities - and then they cross a bridge to get to the main campus and walk the rest of the way through the core of campus. They end up over at the Student Union where the Bookstore is located. They will have seen our Athletics area by the end of the tour. The shuttle picks them back up to transport them back to the Visitor Center. They can stay on campus if they like. The Student Union has a food court so we do invite them to have lunch there. They are instructed on which shuttle to catch back. The shuttles run about every 10 minutes or so and it takes about 20 minutes to get back here. We haven't had any complaints about the tour times.

Ours also range from 1.5 to 2 hours. We have visited peer institutions and always find that to be the norm. You do occassionally have folks that will complain, but on the whole people are (a) grateful to see as much as possible, and (b) anticipating that length of time due to past experiences.

One thing that we have incorporated over the years is the use of our shuttles to get back to the center of campus from the "end" of the tour. Provided that the tour group is smaller, we can have the guides wait with the guests to catch the next shuttle. It not only is a good opportunity for weary travelers to rest a bit, but is a GREAT way for the guests to see the shuttle system that we have for our students.

Best,

Amy

Hello Tiffany!

Our tours also last approximately 1.5-2 hours. We do get some families complaining when they hit the 2 hour mark, but we also hear a lot of positive feedback about seeing important aspects of our campus. It is a bit of a hike out to our rec center, but families always love to see it (it?s brand new) and often report back that they are glad to have taken the long walk.

Good luck! :)

Hi Tiffany,

Our tours are currently 90 minutes long. We have some long winded tour guides who sometimes run over, and we do get complaints. When they go over 90 minutes, many families leave the tour early. They are concerned about their cars (we don?t have parking exclusive to visitors), they get tired of walking and they feel like they?ve seen enough to get a sense of the campus. We also have to battle the heat.

I hope that helps!

Does anyone have any feedback regarding tour length? Our tours are currently an hour and a half long and I am considering lengthening them to two hours, but am worried about asking families to be out walking around that long. Long story short, our office has changed locations on campus, so it takes longer to get to the main part of campus and back to our office. Some of my students can still make the loop in an hour and a half, but I also worry about whether or not families feel like they are being rushed around. I have two questions for the group:

1. How long are your tours (not including an info session)

2. If you have recently increased your tour length to two hours (or more), have you had any negative feedback?

Thank you!!

Tiffany

Hi Tiffany,

Our campus tours at SIU Carbondale last approximately 45-60 minutes, and students see mostly the center of campus. We offer a separate housing tour that last approximately 30-45 minutes, and is offered at a different time than the campus tour(s).

We have strongly considered extending our campus tour to 1? - 2 hours so that visitors can see our Recreation Center, athletic facilities, etc., but have not made that change as of yet.

I look forward to hearing back from any others that have input on this topic!

Best,
tedgie
